There is no second chance with concrete. Once it’s poured it must be finished before it hardens; no going back, no doing over. Ahal Contracting Co. understands this well. Since its beginnings, the company has become one of the region’s leading concrete contractors, installing concrete flatwork, heavy-duty floors and architectural concrete paving throughout the Midwest.
The company was started in 1945 by Dennis’ grandfather, Frank, and his father
William. William ran the company until 1977 when he retired and Dennis became president. Dennis’ son Keith joined the company in 1986. In January 2000 he was promoted to president and C.O.O. and Dennis Ahal became chairman and C.E.O.
Whenever a project is particularly difficult or unusual, you’ll find Ahal. In 1967 Ahal pumped concrete 185 feet for one of the first high-rise buildings ever pumped in the U.S. In 1987 they pumped a lightweight concrete mix 42 stories, to the top of the Metropolitan Square office building in downtown St. Louis. In 1957 Ahal poured the rink slab for the famous Steinberg Skating Rink in Forest Park, and in 1996 they poured the rink slab for the St. Louis Blues Hockey Club at the Kiel Center.
Perhaps Ahal’s most recognizable projects are the many Bomanite paving installations throughout the metropolitan area, including projects at the Missouri Botanical Garden, Six Flags St. Louis and Riverport Casino Center. Bomanite is a monolithic slab that is imprinted with a pattern, then colored and textured to create the appearance of natural materials such as brick, cobblestone and slate. Ahal became a Bomanite licensee in 1977 and today is one of the largest Bomanite contractors in the country.
Ahal has earned local, national and international recognition through the numerous awards honoring numerous flatwork and architectural concrete projects.
Dennis and Keith Ahal know their company‘s success is built around a group of people - field and office personnel - who are as dedicated as they are to providing the best possible product. “We train apprentices and management personnel with the intention of them becoming life-time employees,” says Dennis Ahal. “A large number of people have begun and ended their careers here. Our goal is that commitment and loyalty be exemplified in every installation.”
